This kids’ show from Tyne Tees began its initial 13-week run on Tuesday 10 April 1984 at 4.20 pm and ended on 10 July. The show was devised by ex-Scaffold member John Gorman who co-presented along with Floella Benjamin and magician Clive Webb.
The three guided the kids through a series of games designed to test their skill and courage and took part in a series of quick-fire comedy sketches.
There was also plenty of fresh “gunge” – a holdover from Gorman and Webb’s days on Tiswas.
In fact, How Dare You! could be considered “Son of Tiswas” in concept and presentation.
The games included ‘Down The Drain’, ‘Nellyball’, ‘Hat Catchers’ and ‘Teach ’em a lesson’.
The children in the studio – aged between 9 and 13 – were picked from schools in the northeast of England.
Floella Benjamin did not return for the 1985 series and was replaced by Cheryl Baker from Bucks Fizz and Carrie Gray, a singer and dancer who had previously appeared on The Kenny Everett Show.
When the show returned in 1987, Baker had left and the lineup of John, Clive and Carrie continued with the show until the end.
