Adapted from the romantic novel by Daphne Du Maurier, Jamaica Inn began on a wild night off the Cornish coast with a shipwreck and young Mary Yellan (Jane Seymour) losing her father to the notorious wrecking gang.
When her mother dies of grief soon after, Mary seeks out her Aunt Patience (Billie Whitelaw) in a lonely inn in the midst of desolate Bodmin Moor.
Mary is caught up in a web of intrigue at Jamaica Inn, which she discovers is a notorious haunt for thieves and smugglers with her Uncle Joss (Patrick McGoohan, pictured) as their violent leader.
She finds an unexpected and roguish ally in Joss’s horse-thieving brother Jem (Trevor Eve).
Aired over two nights on Monday 9 May and Tuesday 10 May 1983, the HTV miniseries was produced by Peter Graham Scott and directed by Lawrence Gordon with a script written by Derek Marlowe.
