Seth Raven (Bernard Cribbins) was the odd job man in a small (fictional) village called Langley Bottom (population 227) in the Yorkshire Dales, which had one church, one school, two pubs and a post office – and the bicycle-riding village bobby had only made one arrest in 30 years!
But the outward appearance of peace and tranquillity was deceptive, and nosey parker Seth spent most of his time poking his nose into other people’s business and exposing the intrigue and scandal beneath the respectable veneer of the tight-knit community.
Seth spoke directly to the camera, regularly dispensing “watch what’s going to happen next” gossip.
Regular characters included the grocer, Mr Patel (Kaleem Janjua), his wife (Jamila Massey), wealthy spinster sisters Madge and Hilda Howarth (Barbara Hicks and Rhoda Lewis), and the trendy local vicar, the Reverend Dennis Claybourne (Tim Barrett).
The slow-moving comedy – scripted by John Junkin and Barry Cryer – did not perform well, and Yorkshire Television dropped the show after just seven episodes. Bernard Cribbins moved on to the even more slow-moving High and Dry.
