This attractive, well-produced and high-calibre espionage serial from the BBC revolved around Captain Aubrey Percival (Michael Denison) – head of the Special Intelligence Service (SIS).
Captain Percival wore a bowler, carried a rolled umbrella, relaxed to Elgar, had rounded upper-class vowels, and sipped Muscadet and pink gins in a luxuriously appointed barge moored in the shadow of Westminster.
He was no more emotionally affected when frying mushrooms as a reward for services rendered by his two assistants – Jo (Lucy Fleming) and ex-cop Danny (Dean Harris) – than when he was told that the arms manufacturer he had caught selling top-secret missile systems to the Russians would find his life dramatically shortened as a result.
