The crew of the Magic Micro Mission spaceship were on a quest to “prove that there’s life after school” via teaching viewers how to understand the world of computers.
Adrian Hedley captained the spaceship in his orange jumpsuit, with a loyal crew at his command comprising Jo Wheeler (squeezed into a tight silver cat suit), computer expert Egghead (Dr John Barker), and the sardonic computer Prune (Hilary Minster).
The crew were also joined by ‘The Famous Five’ (not the ones of Enid Blyton fame). This was a panel of five children – Mandy, Robin, Julia, Leslie and Stephen – who provided informal game reviews each week, giving the games marks out of 5.
Computer game developers frequently stopped by the spaceship to discuss their latest efforts. Most notably, the highly eccentric duo Groucho (dressed as Groucho Marx) and Piman (a bizarre pink creation with a lengthy proboscis) turned up to exhibit their family-friendly, non-violent games, and Egghead delighted in his ‘Jargon Gobbler’ section which educated young viewers on the basics of computer operation and programming.
The role of computers in music was also a major theme, and Rick Wakeman turned up to showcase the magic of electronic keyboards, and Chris Sievy (the man behind Frank Sidebottom) demonstrated his 8-bit music videos.
Magic Micro Mission was produced by Central Television but was only transmitted by a handful of regional ITV broadcasters (Central, TVS, Ulster and Channel Television).
