Debuting on 6 January 1984 and broadcast only in the LWT region, Pyjamarama aired late (11.30 pm or later) on Friday evenings and was never going to be a ratings winner.
Taking advantage of the burgeoning live comedy scene in London, Pyjamarama was hosted by Arthur Smith and showcased some of the best of the new wave of comedic (and musical) acts from the city’s clubs and fringe theatre venues.
Six episodes were transmitted with each one featuring two to three acts – many now largely forgotten – such as Chris Barrie, John Dowie, Clive Anderson, Helen Lederer, Norman Lovett (in his first-ever TV appearance), Nick Revell, Jenny Lecoat, Mark Steel, Ronnie Golden, Mac McDonald, The Chevalier Brothers, John Hegley and The Popticians, Fascinating Aida, Harvey & The Wallbangers, and The Joeys.
