Bookkeeper Elsie Beecroft (Brigit Forsyth) and secretary Sharon Wilkes (Janette Beverley) worked in the back office of James Blake and Sons, Manchester-based printers and manufacturers of greetings cards and calendars.
Middle-aged Elsie was the bossy, efficient mother hen of the office when young and inexperienced Sharon arrived (to fill a vacancy that Elsie had earmarked for one of her relatives). The fact that Sharon was the shop steward’s niece didn’t help matters.
At first, the atmosphere was frosty until both girls realised they needed to share the office and so learned to live with each other, eventually becoming unlikely friends.
Bruce Montague costarred as Elsie’s husband, Roland. Sharon’s boyfriend Wayne (John Wild) and her brother Elvis (Lee Daley) appeared regularly, as did the lecherous floor manager at Blake and Sons, Stanley Crabtree (John F Landry) and the grumpy tea lady, Ivy (Maggie Jones).
