This stylish NBC adventure series featured a black 1965 Corvette Stingray – the trademark ride of a mysterious man known only as Ray who travelled across America helping people who were unable to turn to the police for help.
Ray (Nick Mancuso) had no friends and only fleeting romantic relationships. The only thing known about him was that he was skilled in martial arts and was an expert spy and infiltrator (it was suggested that he was possibly an agent for the CIA).
Ray could only be contacted through a newspaper ad that ran on Fridays: “’65 black Stingray for sale. Barter only. Call 555-7687.”
While it was never stated, Ray was apparently independently wealthy and did what he did as a hobby.
He wouldn’t accept money for his help and asked only for a favour whenever he needed it as payment (“A favour for a favour”). Whenever Ray did request a favour, it was always to help another client rather than for his own benefit.
Ray wouldn’t do repeat favours, but if he felt it was warranted, he would accept a referral from a client.
The demise of the show was hastened by its roving time slot which caused it to suffer in the ratings.
