A non-profit teen crisis centre at 413 Hope Street in New York saw counsellors, doctors, psychologists and social workers – and wealthy businessman Phil Thomas (Richard Roundtree), who established the centre when his son was murdered for his sneakers – struggling to cope with troubled inner-city youths and their families in need of help (both medical and psychological).
Stories focussed on realistic issues – from AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases to prostitution and wife beaters – and the work of the staff at the centre as they dealt with the harsh realities of inner-city life.
Regular characters included staff psychologist Antonio Collins (Jesse L. Martin), concerned counsellor Juanita Barnes (Shari Headley), and attorney (and comic relief) Sylvia Jennings (Kelly Coffield Park).
Despite favourable reviews, Fox cancelled the series in October 1997 after less than half a season.
