Following the huge success of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977), NBC produced this sci-fi drama series based on actual cases from the files of the United States Air Force ‘Project Blue Book’, which was a half-hearted Top Secret project to investigate UFO sightings in the 1960s.
Two USAF investigators – Major Jake Gatlin (William Jordan) and Sergeant Harry Fitz (Caskey Swaim) – travelled around America investigating alleged UFO sightings and related phenomena.
“It’s not our job to believe or disbelieve,” explained Gatlin. “We’re here to prove it happened or didn’t happen. And then explain it”.
Unfortunately, most of the Project UFO files were totally inconclusive, but the basic concept provided us with The X Files many years later.
Producer for the show was retired Colonel William T Coleman, the chief Air Force spokesman for Project Blue Book, who was not only highly familiar with the material but had actually chased a UFO while flying a B-25 out of Miami back in 1954.
Coleman admitted to being neither a sceptic nor a believer.
