Norman Lear created this CBS series to make use of the sets from All in the Family (1971), which had been sitting in storage since the cancellation of Archie Bunker’s Place in 1979.
The black Cumberbatch family moves into the former Queens home of Archie Bunker at 704 Hauser Street years after Bunker had sold the house.
Ernest Cumberbatch (John Amos of Good Times fame) is a liberal auto mechanic and a veteran of the 1960s civil rights battles. He is often arguing with his adult son, “Goodie” (T.E. Russell), an arch-conservative who listens to Rush Limbaugh and dates Cherlyn Markowitz (Maura Tierney), a white Jewish girl from down the street.
Ernest’s wife, Rose (Lynnie Godfrey) – an independent woman with a catering service – uses her strong religious beliefs to play referee.
The characters were clearly supposed to spark the same fireworks as All In The Family had but lacked the depth to make viewers care.
704 Hauser Street did not survive to a second series.
