Roy Marsden returned once again as Commander Adam Dalgleish in this three-part murder mystery from PD James. It was Marsden’s 10th appearance as the poetry-loving Scotland Yard detective.
The story opens with someone cutting out a photograph of top-flight barrister Venetia Aldridge (Penny Downie) and sticking it on a piece of paper with the heading “1958 – 1998”. It turns out that Venetia has made dozens of enemies before she’s found murdered in her chambers.
Was her death motivated by one of her competitors in London’s legal inner circle? or could it have been Gary Ashe (Ricci Harnett), the smarmy young man accused of murdering his aunt in a particularly brutal fashion for whom she just won an acquittal and who now wants to marry Aldridge’s 18-year-old daughter?
