Debuting on Wednesday 28 March 1990, this exciting 6-part BBC series was based on a 1973 novel by Peter Dickinson.
13-year-old Davy Price (Tat Whalley) is sent with his young sister Penny (Emma-Louise Harrington) to stay with his grandparents (Cynthia Grenville and Denys Graham) in Wales, where he has an accident in a quarry and subsequently discovers he has a talent known as “The Gift”.
Davy can read people’s minds and has visions of the past and premonitions of the future.
Bullied at his new school by Colin (Richard Hanson), Davy befriends Sonia Parsons (Jodhi May), whose uncle, George Palozzi (John Levitt) – a shabby theatrical agent – wants to put Davy on the stage to use his gift for financial gain.
Davy has a premonition of an imminent £190,000 wages robbery involving his father, John (Jeff Rawle), and three strangers whom Davy refers to as Wolf (Gary Whelan), Black Hat (Carl Chase) and Monkey (Nicolas Tennant). He manages to talk his father into informing on the gang, and the police foil the heist.
Wolf – the most psychotic of the gang – manages to escape and plants a bomb in the Price house. The family escapes and returns to Wales to recover from their ordeal.
But Wolf pursues them, culminating in a dramatic showdown at the quarry where it becomes apparent that Wolf is, in fact, an ancient warrior from the far-distant past – the fabled “man of fire”.
The next day, Davy wakes up without the gift.
