Gary Olsen (from 2 Point 4 Children) starred as Dr Michael Jimson, the genial Registrar in the surgical ward of the newly independent (but crisis-torn) St James General Hospital.
The ward was run by Administrator Diana Ewerts (Deborah Norton), a dead ringer for Baroness Hacksaw. Her regime was cordially detested by Dr Jimson and a bunch of good-hearted, well-meaning, old-style NHS types who made up Surgical Team B, but much approved of by Dr Rex Regis (Roger Lloyd Pack), a crazed and cold-hearted scalpel-happy surgeon straight out of Central Casting.
Felicity Montagu played Dr Kate Russell, the newly-appointed consultant physician who drew daggers with Regis and his “cut ’em first, ask questions later” policy, allowing patients – or “units” as Diana called them – to be admitted and discharged more quickly.
The situations were sometimes funny, but the dialogue was often crass. For example, Rex said to Michael: “Why don’t you put on spiked gloves and give yourself a rectal examination?” Even BBC1 audiences deserved better.
