This ITV children’s sci-fi comedy from Tyne Tees Television featured Kappatoo (Simon Nash), a 16-year-old boy from the year 2270 who time-swapped with his 20th-century identical twin, Simon Cashmere (also Simon Nash).
Denise Van Outen (then without the “van”) co-starred as Tracey Cotton, the object of Simon’s teenage desire.
Former Copy Cats star Andrew O’Connor played the human manifestation of Simon’s 23rd-century computer who helped the 20th-century boy cope with life in the future.
Two years later, Nicholas Parsons appeared in the second series (now named Kappatoo II) as the smarmy host of a 23rd-century gameshow called Ultramatch.
Former Rock Follies star Rula Lenska appeared as Zeta, a scheming villainess from the future in a slinky catsuit, although Kappatoo’s primary arch-enemy was Sigmasix (Felipe Izquierdo).
Filmed at Tyne Tees studios and on location around the North East (the school sequences were filmed in Heaton), the series was based on two paperback books by Ben Steed, who spent 15 years as a television scriptwriter.
