This short-lived Hanna-Barbera cartoon starred Potsworth, an English Springer Spaniel owned by an artistic 10-year-old African-American boy named Carter (voiced by George Lemore).
Their best friends are Keiko (Janice Kawaye) – a 9-year-old Asian-American girl who travels around on a hoverboard; cynical and bratty redheaded 8-year-old Rosie (Elisabeth Harnois); and her 6-year-old brother Nick (Whit Hertford) – who can fly and has a living toy dinosaur named Murphy (Frank Welker).
Each night, when the five are asleep, they meet up in a magical land called the Dream Zone. Here Potsworth can speak (voiced by Clive Revill), and the five have formed a group called the Midnight Patrol.
Stories follow the Midnight Patrol as they attempt to foil the dimwitted Nightmare Prince (Rob Paulsen) – who is on a quest to ruin everyone’s dreams – and his minions, Igor, Irving and Shorty.
The series was created by Hertfordshire (UK) couple Martin and Vivien Powell, who based it on their real-life spring spaniel (also called Potsworth).
They took their concept to Hanna-Barbera and negotiated a 50/50 deal.
The real Potsworth became something of a celebrity in Britain when he featured extensively in the media as part of the promotion for the cartoon series when it first aired in the UK.
A comic strip based on the show also featured in the merged Beezer and Topper and, when that comic closed, The Dandy.
