This 10-part ITV series from Central Television focussed on seven youngsters from Birnam Lodge Children’s Home.
As the series began, Amber (Polly York) was about to be fostered when vegetarian tomboy Jodie (Louisa Milwood-Haigh) ran away. Meanwhile, Lawrence (Martino Lazzeri) conned Pud (David Thwaites) out of his pocket money but was foiled by eagle-eyed Sharon (Kerry Stacey).
13-year-old precocious, blue-eyed, blonde Zoe (Nancy Lodder) believed strongly that she was not like the other residents, who were in her view “only there because they’re too young to send to prison”.
Written by American daytime television veteran Victor Gialanella (who had written for General Hospital, Another World and The Guiding Light, amongst others), storylines covered topics ranging from teenage crushes and wet dreams to fostering and child abuse.
