1 9 9 5 – 1 9 9 7 (UK)
22 x 30 minute episodes
This BBC1 sitcom revolved around middle-class couple Maggie (Penelope Keith) and Andrew (former star of The Champions, William Gaunt) Prentice, who are looking forward to retiring to France when they suddenly become the legal guardians of their freshly orphaned grandchildren, who they barely know.
The three kids are hostile and Maggie – abrasive, easily irritated and self-involved – is resentful of the change in plans and the curtailment of their personal freedom. Gone are the vintage wine collection, the antique car, and all their child-free friends.
The oldest child, Georgia (Ann Gosling), is a sulky, politically-correct little snot with a strict, self-imposed vegetarian diet. The elder boy, Philip (Matthew Clarke) only eats Spam. The youngest, Jake (Jamie Lucraft), won’t eat anything that’s round and loves stick insects, pigeons, hamsters, rabbits, parrots and almost all animals.
Gradually, the five of them develop into a real family.
Liz (Tracie Bennett) is their sexy and somewhat helpful cleaner. Muscular young builder Tom (Mark Powley), has been engaged by Andrew to build an extension on the house following the arrival of the three kids.
The series was written by Jan Etherington and Gavin Petrie, the team behind the hit sitcom Second Thoughts.
