This three-part thriller from LWT was based on a book by sci-fi writer Stephen Gallagher and starred Stephen Tompkinson from Ballykissangel and Drop The Dead Donkey as mild-mannered English teacher Jim Harper who is working at the International Chalet School in the Swiss Alps and is besotted with a Swiss woman called Rochelle Genoud (Lydzia Englert)
Rochelle is an executive with a multinational pharmaceutical company Risinger Genoud who are working on a mind-altering drug called Mentozone – all those exposed to the drug are experiencing a shared nightmare world.
What Jim doesn’t realise is that he is about to become their unwitting guinea pig – a walking experiment which could make illegal millions for the evil firm (Jim is described by Rochelle as “$50 billion on legs”).
As the plot thickens, Jim flees to England but – although he is aided by Linda (Maria Lennon) – he cannot escape the clutches of Risinger Genoud – wherever he turns he finds betrayal and his world edges on nightmares between life and death, waking and dreaming, insanity and sanity
Oktober came across as a low-budget Bond film but was thoroughly entertaining nonetheless.
