This animated adaptation of Lee Falk’s newspaper comic strip is set in the city-state of Metropia. Plant and animal life is disappearing all around the world, and New Brazil is one of the few places on the planet where jungles still exist.

18-year-old Kit Walker Jr (voiced by Scott Valentine), loves nature and hopes to one day leave the city and become an ecological engineer in the jungles of New Brazil.

Kit is an orphan and the son of a father he never really knew – a man who was The Phantom, a mysterious figure who has protected Africa for over 500 years. It was a secret known only by his father’s sister, Heloise (Carrie Snodgress) with whom Kit now lives.

One day, Kit stumbles upon a secret vault in the house and finds a mysterious skull ring. He follows a dark hallway and is led to a secret chamber that houses Guran, his late father’s aide.

Through Guran (voiced by J.D. Hall), Kit learns that in the year 1566, a sailing ship was attacked by pirates from the Bay of Bangala.

All the passengers perished except for one young boy, who was rescued by a native from an African tribe called the Bandai. The boy was raised by the tribe and taught their secret ways. He swore an oath to fight injustice wherever he found it as The Phantom.

For twenty-three generations, a Walker has become the Phantom so the world would believe there is only one man – a man who cannot die, the ghost who walks – The Phantom.

“You are your father’s son,” Guran tells young Kit, “and now it’s your turn.” And so Kit Walker Jr. becomes the 24th Phantom.

Stories relate Kit’s battle against evil, particularly the dealings of Rebecca Madison (voiced by Margot Kidder) – the owner of Maximum, Inc. who wants to control the world – and her son, Max (Jeff Bennett).

Celebrity guest voice artists in the series included Ron Perlman, Mark Hamill, Deborah Harry and Paul Williams.
