Former Manfred Mann vocalist Paul Jones starred in this BBC series for children as Jack Green, an eccentric environmental activist whose curiosity and strange methods sometimes get him into trouble.
Jack is on a mission to save the planet. His archenemy is a criminal and freelance spy known only as “The Vixen” (Fenella Fielding).
Jack’s family comprises his sister Elizabeth Stevens (Christine Lohr) and her husband Edward (Brian Capron), and their children Michael (Giuseppe Peluso) and Kate (Helen Lambert).
The series consisted of four complete stories (written by Jim Eldridge), each with six episodes.
‘Uncle Jack And Operation Green’ saw Jack accidentally acquire the formula for a deadly gas which disintegrates bones and reduces humans to a pile of jelly.
He and his niece and nephew find themselves mixed up with the CIA, KGB, MI5 and bad guy Jose Cuervo (Jimmi Harkishin) as they are carried along on a whirlwind of adventure and intrigue involving kidnapping, bugging, poisoning and piranha fish.
Uncle Jack and his sister’s family travel to Scotland in ‘Uncle Jack And The Loch Noch Monster’ to visit his cousin and his daughter Tammy (Laura Wilson) only to discover Jack’s cousin has disappeared while fishing in his boat at Loch Noch.
Jack discovers the marine base at the Loch is up to something sinister (involving radioactive material), and The Vixen has a new evil scheme.
In ‘Uncle Jack And The Dark Side of the Moon’, the evil Vixen concocts a plan to control the world’s weather from her base on the moon with the help of school headmistress Miss Bones (Helen Cotterill). Uncle Jack and friends must stop them before it’s too late.
The fourth (and final) series, ‘Uncle Jack And Cleopatra’s Mummy’, had Jack and his niece Helen Brimley (Catherine Bailey) on an archaeological dig at El Ninny, where legend has it that Cleopatra’s gold is buried in the lost tomb of El Wadi Whant. The rumour has encouraged treasure-seekers from around the world.
Jack was assisted this time by his scientist friend, Imogen Prattalot, and the unfortunately-named Mustafa Pipi (Stewart Permutt).
