13 x 30 minute episodes
Premiering in September 1990, this Fox cartoon was set at Zazoo University – a fantastical college for unusual and socially conscious animals.
The students included Bully Wooly Mammoth, a gentle giant who loved to play the piano; Boink (a bug), and Slogo and Logan, two Romanian acrobats who brought their circus antics into the school.
Staff included Miss Devine, an extravagant bohemian teacher (who happened to be a dog and had a pet “Rarf”); a penguin called Professor Zork; science lecturer Dr Russell (a walrus); and a music teacher who thought of himself as the new Frank Sinatra.
Crayons sprang to life, students shrank to 1 inch tall, and extinct animals appeared in the janitor’s closet . . .
Through the antics of the animals, life lessons were related.
Although aimed at children, it was presented in an offbeat, very artsy style that was above the mentality of its target audience.
Created by children’s author, illustrator and philanthropist Shane DeRolfe and written by husband-and-wife team Dennys McCoy and Pamela Hickey, most of the Fox affiliates refused to air the show, and it was dropped after just 13 episodes.
