Temperamental and shouty Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) of the Metropolitan Police leads a multidisciplinary team of detectives and scientists who investigate old, unsolved “cold case” murders using modern methods and technologies that may not have been available during the original investigations.
The specialist Cold Case Unit initially includes psychological profiler Dr Grace Foley (Sue Johnston from The Royle Family and Brookside), forensic pathologist Dr Frankie Wharton (Holly Aird) and police officers Spencer Jordan (Wil Johnson) and Mel Silver (Claire Goose).
They were later joined by forensic pathologist Dr Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald) and Detective Constable (later Detective Sergeant) Stella Goodman (Félicité Du Jeu), following the murder of Mel Silver.
Stella also died after being shot in the leg by a suspect and developing a thrombosis as a result of the injury.
The critically acclaimed BBC series ran for 9 series between 2000 and 2011. Each story unfolded across two one-hour episodes shown on consecutive nights.
Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald) was later spun off into her own six-episode series, The Body Farm (2011), where she headed a research unit studying how bodies decompose.
