This NBC drama series was set in Stumper, Texas – a small (fictional) town just outside Dallas. The town is obsessed with high school football, so much so that it is sacred: “right up there with God, country and barbecue.”
Unfortunately for the town, the football team is on a serious losing streak.
Coming to the rescue is Ed Clemons (John Terry), an insurance salesman and former high school football star with coaching experience who has agreed to take on the job of coach and whip the team back into shape in just one season.
Ed is married to Maggie (Donna Bullock) – who takes over his insurance business while Ed is coaching the team – and is the father of college-age Jill (Robyn Lively), 11-year-old Jenny (Vanessa Lee Evigan) and 16-year-old Joe Willie (Ben Affleck).
Also appearing is Ed’s friend and former teammate, Niles Hardeman (Stephen Tobolowsky), a car dealer.
Stories follow Ed as he does what he can (no matter whose feathers he ruffles) to turn a losing team into the state champions.
