This NBC sitcom revolved around Jonathan Eliot (Jonathan Silverman) – a young man with a big dream: to become a successful writer and find a girl he could call his own.
Jonathan lived in Manhattan and was the last unmarried person in his circle of friends. His mishaps as he attempted to fulfil his dreams were the focal point of the series.
Jonathan’s best friend, Sam Sloan (Joey Slotnick), was a schemer whose cons always involved Jonathan and always landed him in hot water.
Coming to the rescue was Sam’s wife, Trudy (Ming-Na Wen), who had a true knack for resolving the problems Sam caused.
Also sharing Jonathan’s dream was his childhood friend, Janeane Percy-Parker (Jessica Hecht), a lovable girl who was now married to Matt Parker (Mark Moses), an uptight yuppie who appeared obnoxious but was quite likeable once you got to know him.
Rounding out the cast was Manny (Ernest Borgnine), the building’s doorman who tried to help his tenants with their problems.
Despite hitting the Top 10 in the ratings in its first season, many critics felt the show wasn’t strong enough for the cushy timeslot between Friends and Seinfeld, and NBC tinkered with the format. Second season episodes dropped the characters of Janeane and Matt and added Marie (Olivia d’Abo) and Russell (Shawn Michael Howard) as Jonathan’s new friends.
