This comedy series from ATN-7 (Australia) was based on a series of Aussie films from the 1930s and a popular radio serial that started on 2GB and ran on 2UW from 1936 to 1955 (with George Edwards as Dad and John Saul as Dave.
This time around the story was updated to 1972, and Dad was played by Gordon Chater, with newcomer Garry McDonald (destined to become Norman Gunston and future star of Mother and Son) as Dave.
A pilot aired in February 1972, with the series proper – directed by Hugh Taylor – following in November and December of that year.
Dave’s love interest, Mabel, was played by Garry McDonald’s real-life wife, Diane Craig.
Outdoor location shots were filmed at Riverstone and Windsor in Sydney’s west. Dad’s farm was actually a property off Windsor Road.
