Charlie Drake’s first starring television vehicle debuted on 6 May 1957 and ran for 12 episodes on the BBC.
Guests on the series included Warren Mitchell, Valentine Dyall, Irene Handl, Arthur Mullard and Totti Truman Taylor.
While viewers enjoyed Drake’s knockabout humour, The Guardian at the time reviewed the show as “one of the most inane entertainments yet devised: half an hour of slapstick and horseplay, old jokes and tedium”.
Charlie Drake died in December 2006 after a long and successful career in television, film and the recording industry. He was 81.
