Originally Ray McNutley (Ray Milland) was an absent-minded professor of English literature at Lynn Haven College for Women in New England where every female swooned for him. Luckily his pretty blonde wife Peggy (Phyllis Avery) was very understanding. Ray and Peggy lived in a white frame suburban house at 187 Maple Terrace.
Their neighbours at #185 were real estate salesman Pete Thompson (Gordon Jones) and his wife, Ruth (Jacqueline deWit). Pete called Ray, “Ray Boy”. Ray called him “Petey”.
The college dean was Josephine Bradley (Minerva Urecal), a stuffy older woman and a 30-year veteran of the school, who in turn reported to Dr Peabody, chair of the Board of Trustees.
By the second year, Ray was now a drama teacher at the co-ed Comstock University in California – headed by Dean Dodsworth (Lloyd Corrigan) – and his surname had changed to McNulty. The series was now known as The Ray Milland Show.
Second-season episodes provided slightly more adult storylines than had been the norm under the show’s initial regime.
