Canadian-born Mike Darrow hosted this ABC game show where two young married couples competed to win a brand new furnished home worth $40,000 or more.
The couples nominated the type of house they wanted to play for – ranch-style, farmhouse, Spanish, modern etc – or they could opt for a less expensive alternative such as a vacation cottage, houseboat or motorhome (still worth at least $8,500).
Several rounds of general knowledge questions were played (with multiple-choice and true-or-false answers) with cash amounts awarded for correct answers. The top-scoring couple of the day won a room of furniture, valued at $3,000 or more.
If a competing couple won a certain number of shows (seven on the daytime series, four on the prime-time version), they won their dream house.
The show was eventually cancelled not due to poor ratings, but because the houses given away as grand prizes weren’t finished – it then cost the contestants a chunk of cash to be able to afford the land.
Dream House was revised by NBC in 1983 with Bob Eubanks as host. The prize houses – provided by various national construction firms – were now worth $100,000 or more.
