A superior hospital drama centring on an experienced physician and his gifted young colleague.
Dr Paul Lochner (James Daly, pictured at left) is the experienced administrative surgeon and chief of staff at University Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Joe Gannon (Chad Everett) is a young associate professor of surgery and a close friend and colleague of Dr Lochner’s.
Stories relate the events in their lives in an adult-oriented and technically accurate drama that depicts the problems faced by doctors in a large city hospital. The series aired in the UK as Calling Dr. Gannon.
At the start of the second season, Dr Gannon took on the added responsibilities of director of the student health service, an appropriate post for a young physician who could identify closely with the students.
A number of other doctors and nurses came and went in the cast; Miss Wilcox (Audrey Totter), the extremely efficient head nurse, achieved co-star billing in 1972.
Chad Everett passed away in 2012 after a year-and-a-half-long battle with lung cancer. He was 75.
