A 26-part drama about the Special Investigation Branch of the Royal Military Police (who are colloquially called ‘Red Caps’ – hence the title) with the sensational John Thaw in his first starring role as Sergeant John Mann.
Mann’s investigations concerned British troops accused of anything from desertion to rape and murder, in locations as far-flung as Cyprus and Borneo (although all the episodes were actually made entirely in the studio).
Many of the tough, no-nonsense characteristics exhibited by Thaw as Sergeant Mann were seen once again when he became Detective Inspector Jack Regan of the Flying Squad in The Sweeney (1975 – 78).
Red Cap ran for 8 months on ABC Midlands before being transmitted on the London network from 20 May 1965.
The series was remade in 2001 with a female lead.
