This Australian-made family adventure series was filmed in Penang and starred Hu Pryce as a retired RAAF fighter pilot who operated a small charter flying boat – his “bird” – from a fictitious tropical island in south-east Asia.
He was joined by his 14-year-old son, Nick (played by Mark Lee, who would go on to star in Gallipoli) and together they shared many adventures.
The simple plots and equally simple storylines involved the island’s social aspects, religions, diversity, and its basic differences from the Western world.
The series featured Malaysian actors in both major and supporting roles and attracted some top name Australian actors in guest roles.
