This Quinn Martin crime drama series screened on ABC in 1970 and 1971 and featured police detective lieutenant Dan August (Burt Reynolds) tackling his cases in his hometown of Santa Luisa, California.
The well-mixed populace of Santa Luisa clashed over such things as a fruit pickers strike and school bussing.
Having grown up with many of the area’s offenders and their victims, this tough young cop took a deep personal interest in his investigations – an interest which earned him respect and brought him results.
Made before Burt Reynolds hit the box office big time, the series lasted only one year but, capitalising on the star’s success, it fared much better in re-runs.
Norman Fell played detective sergeant Charles Wilentz, Richard Anderson was the town’s police chief, Ned Romero was detective sergeant Joe Rivera, and Ena Hartman was their secretary.
