This animated spin-off from I Dream of Jeannie had Californian high school senior Corey Anders (voiced by Mark Hamill) overcome by a wave while surfing. Washed up on the beach he stumbled upon a bottle that was buried in the sand.
Upon opening it, a beautiful young genie, named Jeannie (voiced by Julie McWhirter,) and her friend, an inept apprentice genie called Babu (voiced by Joe Besser), emerged and became his servants.
Stories depicted Corey’s attempts to conceal their presence and live the normal life of a teenager, and Jeannie’s efforts to adjust to life in the 1970s and to protect Corey from the wiles of other girls.
Unlike Barbara Eden’s original portrayal of Jeannie – whose powers were evoked by crossing her hands over her chest and blinking her eyes – the animated Jeannie’s powers were in her ponytail.
Some new characters were added for the cartoon, including Corey’s friend Henry Glopp (Bob Hastings) who was the only other person aware of Jeannie’s presence and abilities; Corey’s mother, Mrs Anders (Janet Waldo) and Hadji (John Stephenson), the master of all genies.
The Hanna-Barbera production aired on CBS from 8 September 1973 to 4 August 1975.
