D H Lawrence’s short story of a little boy with uncanny powers to see into the future was adapted by Julian Bond and directed by Peter Medak,
The curious affinity Paul (11-year-old newcomer Nigel Rhodes) has with his rocking horse leads him to be able to guess real winners in real horse races.
Kenneth More plays the boy’s Uncle Oscar, a jovial cove who cashes in on his nephew’s ability to dream tomorrow’s horse-racing results in order to save the boy’s family from threatened poverty.
But Paul is very sensitive, and his uncanny gift comes to him when he goes into a trance state which is destructive to his health. Naturally, it all ends in tears.
The story premiered on ITV on 10 August 1977 and later aired under the anthology title Classics Dark and Dangerous.
