Premiering on Wednesday 21 February 1973, former Blue Peter presenter Valerie Singleton hosted this interview programme on BBC1, talking to personalities from the worlds of entertainment, sport and public affairs who had earned the title “Very Important Person”.
She was joined by a studio audience of 40 children who put their questions to the guest VIPs.
Val began the first series by interviewing star comedy duo Morecambe and Wise. A further two series followed.
Other “VIPs” included former world motor racing champ Graham Hill, future prime minister Margaret Thatcher (then Secretary of State for Education), singer Petula Clark, goalkeeper Gordon Banks, mountaineer Chris Bonington, athlete Mary Peters, footballers Kevin Keegan, singer Les Gray from Mud, adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, actor Michael Crawford, Lord Vic Feather (the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress), impressionist Mike Yarwood, yachtsman Chay Blyth, actress Susan Hampshire, footballer Jackie Charlton and former New Seekers singer Lyn Paul.
The title was changed in the final series from Val Meets The VIPs to Val Meets Mike Yarwood, Val Meets Jackie Charlton etc.
