Dom’s Barber Shop was a Hollywood barbershop for men run by Dom DeLuca (DeLuise), a widower who was also the father of a teenage daughter named Rosa (Lauren Woodland).
The shop was located across the street from a movie studio and frequented by famous stars (who appear as guests) as well as an assortment of odd neighbourhood characters.
Regulars included Maureen the manicurist (Maureen Murphy); Penny, a buxom blonde aerobics instructor (Angela Aames); Dom’s romantic interest, Blanche (Lois Foraker); Charlie, the paranoid private eye (Charlie Callas); and Michael, a regular customer (Michael Chambers).
Stories followed Dom as he and his junior partner, George, attempted to run the shop and deal with the problems that arose from their customers.
The show was low on plot (pizza and tomato sauce recipes, foreign cars, hair growth treatments, spring cleaning, caring for ficus plants) but scored highly for guest stars, including John Forsythe, Dean Martin, Burt Reynolds, Tom Jones, Rita Rudner, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Elliott Gould, Betty White, Ruth Buzzi, Gavin MacLeod, Pat Morita, George Peppard, Dick Clark, Sherman Hemsley and Richard Moll (from Night Court).
Angela Aames died in December 1988 of deterioration of the heart muscle, brought on by a virus. She was just 32.
