Ben Coleman (Matthew Laurance) was a mystery writer who also wrote a column called ‘True Stories’ for the Los Angeles Daily Banner while his girlfriend Laura Kelly (Mary Page Keller) was a caterer who ran ‘Laura’s Cornucopia’ with her younger sister Jane (Jodi Thelen). They lived in an apartment at 981 Fairfax Street.

Richard (Chris Lemmon, Jack Lemmon’s son) and Linda Phillips (Alison La Placa) were a high-powered yuppie couple who lived at 10 West Florist Street with their 4-year-old daughter, Amanda.

Richard was in the patio furniture business and Linda was a studio executive at World Wide Studios, where her boss was Cooper Hayden (Larry Poindexter).

Geneva (Arleen Sorkin) was the Phillips’ wisecracking, sexy maid and babysitter for Amanda, who sometimes fraternised with the sisters.

Richard later quit his job to become a pianist at Jasper’s Bar and Restaurant, while Linda lost her job at World Wide Studios and worked with Laura, before returning in her own short-lived series, Open House, in 1989 and 1990.
