This lunchtime Yorkshire Television show for pre-school children presented the exploits of Heggerty Haggerty – a kindly witch who did her best to live a peaceful, gentle life in her idyllic cottage with Black Cat and Broomstick.
The programme was presented and narrated by George Cole who appeared in front of illustrations of Heggerty Haggerty’s cottage alongside a few props (such as a rustic country wall or a washing line full of pyjamas).
Heggerty Haggerty found maintaining her bucolic way of living severely tested by the impish antics of Broomstick, who threw caution to the wind when it came to magic – resulting in the kind witch finding herself face to face with whirlwinds, giant (and tiny) geese and running shoes with a mind of their own.
She was usually helped by Farmer Giles and Constable Short to restore a healthy balance of normality. Black Cat, meanwhile, was always quick to voice his anxieties about the chaos about to unfold.
