78 x 30 minute episodes
15-year-old Alec Ramsey (Richard Ian Cox) is a young man with a very special horse – “the Black”, an Arabian stallion that no one else can ride.
The Black is swift, and Alec hopes to train him not only to become a racehorse but the fastest horse in the world. Helping Alec is Henry Dailey (Mickey Rooney), a professional trainer who sees great potential in Black.
Stories follow Alec as he and Henry travel the horse racing circuit, seeking to become the world’s best. Plotlines also included Alce’s struggles as a teenager, conflict and corruption within the racing establishment and attempts by saboteurs against the Black.
The series from the Family Channel was based on the 1940s novels by Walter Farley and – in part – on the 1979 feature film.
Most of the first series episodes were filmed around Canada. During the second and third seasons, many episodes were set in New Zealand, France and the United States.
