High Life, The

1 9 9 4 – 1 9 9 5 (UK)
6 x 30 minute episodes

This short-lived comedy series featured airline stewards Sebastian Flight (Alan Cumming) – camp and acerbic – and Steve McCracken (Forbes Masson) – sex-obsessed and ginger – who flew with (fictitious) Scottish airline Air Scotia.

Sebastian and Steve longed to be promoted to long-haul flights to see exotic locations, instead of the current short-haul trips out of Prestwick Airport.

Their sharp-tongued superior, Chief Flight Attendant Shona Spurtle (referred to as “Hitler In Tights”) was played by Siobhan Redmond and Patrick Ryecart played the deranged Captain Hilary Duff.

Cumming and Masson (ho also wrote the series) hammed it up in a mix of visual slapstick and music-hall comedy, although subtitles would have helped with the thick Scottish accents. A second series was written but was never produced due to Cumming’s increasing movie obligations.
