Laurie Hill (DeLane Matthews) is a woman in her mid-thirties who is struggling to balance her roles as a housewife, mother of five-year-old Leo (Eric Lloyd) and doctor. Her immature husband Jeff (Robert Clohessy) is a freelance journalist and stay-at-home Dad.
Laurie has a BA from Cornell University, an MD from the University of Michigan and ten years of clinical experience. She now works at (and is partners in) the Weisman, Kramer and Hill Family Medical Clinic.
Laurie listens to radio station KOLD (91.3 FM) and is on emergency call at Saint John’s Hospital.
Laurie’s business partners are Dr Walter Weisman (Joseph Maher), a grandfatherly physician with one eye on retirement; and Dr Spencer Kramer (Kurt Fuller), a family practitioner with an aversion to people.
Nancy MacIntire (Ellen DeGeneres in an early role) is a flaky office doctor and Beverly Fiedler (Doris Belack) is the office receptionist.
Leo attends the Davis Preschool and has a plush dog named Floppy Dog.
