She-Wolf of London was a British/American co-production in which pretty Los Angeles student Randi Wallace (Kate Hodge) was bitten by a werewolf while studying in England. When the British backers (HTV International) pulled out after 14 episodes, the US production company moved the series stateside, made some cast reductions and format changes and retitled the series Love and Curses.
Randi and her lover, professor of mythology Ian Matheson (Neil Dickson), are contacted by Randi’s friend in Los Angeles, Ellen Cravitz (Mary-Ellen Dunbar), who believes “space aliens” have invaded her neighbourhood in Northridge.
Randi and Ian decide to investigate (which also gives Ian a chance to check on the progress of one of his books, which is being made into a movie at Monumental Pictures).
In Northridge, Randi and Ian discover that trolls are living beneath the town and have made their way from the Earth’s centre to the surface “to eat all the Big Macs we can and get crystal clear TV reception.”
When all seems lost, the Grand Wizard of the Golden Oracle (Milton Selzer) appears to help. He banishes the trolls to the centre of the Earth and disposes of them by turning them into frogs.
With their adventure behind them, Randi and Ian decide to stay in Los Angeles in the hope of finding someone who can cure Randi of her curse (Spoiler Alert: they never do).
Ian acquires a job as the host of How Strange on Channel 89 when his movie deal falls through, and his former contact, now the station owner, Skip Seville (Dan Gilvezan), needs a show to replace Count Phil’s Creature Theater.
Ian sees the show as interviewing “scholars, researchers and academics of the highest order” – Skip sees it as “hype, horror and hooters.” Randi begins working with Ian as his producer.
Randi and Ian live in a luxurious apartment with a secret room behind the bookcase, which serves as a cell to keep Randi from killing when she becomes a werewolf.
The new series lasted just six episodes before it was cancelled.
