Gavin Nelson (John Gordon Sinclair) was a reporter with his own column (hence the title) in the Weekly Herald local newspaper and a propensity to bite off more than he could chew on assignments.
His boss Jackie (Elisabeth Counsell) was continually frustrated at his inability to get that crucial story. His photographer colleague Mike Walker (Steven O’Donnell) was no better at his job. The only one who seemed to take her job seriously was the shy but sexy cub reporter Clare Priddy (Sophie Thompson, sister of Emma) for whom Gavin had romantic feelings.
Gavin eventually formed an uneasy relationship with blonde bimbo receptionist Lorraine Wilde (Camille Coduri), who was well aware of Gavin’s feelings for Clare and put her down at every opportunity.
Nelson’s Column was a follow-up of sorts to An Actor’s Life for Me (1991), also starring John Gordon Sinclair, as a failed actor.
