Detective Inspector Sam Sterne (Ivan Kaye) was young, Jewish and divorced, and lived in a terraced house where he looked after his old-fashioned, widowed mother, Rita (Doreen Mantle) who moved in with him after she had a mild heart attack.
The £4 million Saturday night series from ITV was set in north London where – to the other coppers in his patch – Sterne was known as ‘Sam Saturday’ because he also worked on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath.
Storylines always managed to interweave Sam’s investigations (which were usually Golders Green-connected) with Sam’s personal life and problems, mostly with his married brother (David Fleeshman) and his two daughters who lived with his ex-wife (Tracie Hart) and her wealthy husband (Gareth Marks).
Sam’s partner was the hard-working Detective Sergeant Jim Butler (Peter Armitage).
