Max Osborne (George Cole) is a middle manager at a High Wycombe furniture factory who is suddenly faced with redundancy when the company is taken over by another company called Garlands.
David Soames (Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell) – the son of the factory owner (Clive Morton) and an old army friend of Max’s (it was he who got Max the job at the factory) – offers Max a position as manager of a subsidiary firm in Perth, Australia, as consolation.
His mistress, Muriel (Jennifer Wilson) thinks he should accept the offer of the job in Australia and promises she and her daughter, Lucy (Zuleika Robson) will go with him on the condition that Max divorces his wife, Sally (Jean Harvey) and leave his children, Clare (Lucy Appleby) and Michael (Christopher Witty) behind.
Max – an engaging semi failure – takes 13 episodes to decide whether to go down under in this series from Associated rediffusion (created by Julian Bond).
