33-year-old gold prospector Luke Carpenter (Monte Markham) heads off to make his fortune in Alaska in 1900, only to be caught in an avalanche and frozen in suspended animation inside an Alaskan glacier until 1967.
Returning to civilisation, Luke moves in with his now-67-year-old son Edwin (Arthur O’Connell), a real estate salesman, in Woodland Oaks, California.
The 19th-century prospector has no knowledge of the 20th century and looks exactly like his stuck-up buttoned-down 33-year-old grandson Ken (also Monte Markham).
Luke now tries to adjust to normal life, but having been frozen in time for over half a century, even simple things like obtaining a social security number prove troublesome.
Luke’s defrosting was such a freak occurrence that the military want to keep it a secret and that responsibility largely falls to army doctor Colonel Garroway (Frank Maxwell).
The colonel tries to keep Luke out of the public eye as much as possible, but Luke is extremely curious about the new world he has suddenly become part of.
The colonel has a hippie daughter named Marcia (Karen Black) and an army nurse named Lucille Anderson (Bridget Hanley).
