Derek Nimmo and Rosemary Leach starred as Chris and Katy Bunting – a couple expecting their first offspring after 17 years of marriage – in this Yorkshire Television sitcom.
Chris had made a good living out of the family business (Bunting’s Furs: Furriers to Her Majesty Queen Victoria) and he and Katy had enjoyed happily married life for over a decade and a half.
Things moved at a leisurely pace in this gentle comedy – Nimmo’s first sitcom for ITV – and it wasn’t until a second series that Baby Bunting duly arrived, with an unorthodox delivery on a milk float.
Gerry (Michael Graham Cox) and Jill (Rosemary Martin) Simpson were Chris and Katy’s friends, who had their own baby named Power Cut (after the circumstances of his conception). Fanny Rowe played Chris’s mother.
The jokes were so familiar – the hospital jokes, the baby jokes, the milkman jokes, the long-suffering wife and incompetent husband jokes – that it seemed writer Jan Butlin (a former Crossroads actress) had written not so much a script as an anthology. Nonetheless, the show shot straight to #1 in the ITV ratings.
