Bangers and Mash were two cheeky and mischievous young chimpanzees who lived in Chimpton on a faraway island in the sea. Like all the inhabitants of their island, they lived in a house built on top of a tree (at No. 3 Tree Street).
The pair frequently made a mess or broke something important – usually belonging to their parents or Gran (who also lived with them).
The chimps had a dog called Mick and a friend called friend Petal, who would often physically hurt them if their antics annoyed her too much.
Their teacher at Chimpton Primatree School, Mrs Chum (pictured), also punished them often, making them write their ABCs ten times.
The local witch, Mrs Snitchnose, was a rat-like creature with a long nose with hairs coming out of it. She lived in an old pipe and flew around Chimpton, taunting the inhabitants and casting spells.
The series – produced by FilmFair for Central Television – was based on a series of children’s books by Paul Groves and Edward McLachlan.
Narration and character voices were provided by Jonathan Kydd, with the theme tune and incidental music written and performed by Chas & Dave.
