Lorne Greene was back in the Irwin Allen-produced series Code Red as Joe Rorchek, captain of Battalion number 6, Station Number 1, of the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the stern patriarch of a family of dedicated firefighters in LA.
His two sons, Ted (Andrew Stevens) and Chris (Flash Gordon star Sam J Jones, pictured) – who probably weren’t allowed to watch Bonanza – were following in the old man’s footsteps, also with Battalion Number 6.
Ted’s code was “Charlie 10”, and Chris, who piloted a helicopter, was “Fire Chopper 5”.
They also spent a fair amount of time following Haley Green (Martina Deignan), a comely young thing who happened to be LA’s first female firefighter.
So the scene was set for fiery disasters, perilous rescues and mayhap a touch of romance.
A network release at the time of the ABC debut also said: “each episode will contain fire safety and lifesaving themes for young viewers”.
Joe’s young, adopted son, Danny Blake (Adam Rich) was a Junior Fire Explorer. Joe and his wife Ann (Julie Adams) lived at 9876 Temple Lane.
